Innovative Solutions for Water Management: The Contribution of LIFE RESEAU on World Water Day

As every year, on 22nd March we celebrate World Water Day, an occasion to reflect on the importance of ensuring equitable access to clean water and protecting the natural sources of water resources that supply millions of people. This year, the theme “Save our glaciers” aligns with the goal of LIFE RESEAU: the protection and sustainable management of water resources essential for life.

Glaciers, which act as natural freshwater reserves, are rapidly declining due to climate change. This directly affects the availability of water in many regions of the world, especially in areas that depend on these resources for drinking water supply and the balance of aquatic ecosystems.

LIFE RESEAU, with its goal of reducing untreated wastewater discharges into the aquatic environment by up to 100%, shares this same vision of protecting natural resources and positions itself as a key initiative to improve water management. Evidence of this is its work to increase the resilience of sanitation infrastructure in areas affected by intense rainfall.

Project Activities

To achieve this, the consortium formed by ITGAqualia, and VCS Denmark is developing two innovative retrofitting solutions for Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) in Moaña and Søndersø, with the aim of increasing their treatment capacity and ensuring that treated water meets the highest quality standards. Additionally, it is creating a tool to reduce infiltrations in the sanitation network, improving system efficiency and protecting aquatic ecosystems.

Through these actions, LIFE RESEAU directly contributes to responsible and sustainable water management, supporting global efforts to ensure that everyone, both today and in the future, can access clean and safe water.
